What is an Apostille?

“Apostilles do not certify the content of the public documents(s) to which it relates. They do not grant authority and they do not give any additional weight to the content of the underlying document(s). An Apostille may never be used for the recognition of a document(s) in the country where that document(s) was issued.” - Secretary of State of Maryland

Purpose of an Apostille

When traveling to a foreign country, that country may require specific documents and will want proof that the documents are authentic. Some reasons for this authentication are:

- Adoption Abroad

- Destination Weddings

- Education Abroad

- Working overseas

- Overseas banking

- Many other reasons

Authentication vs. Legalization

For private documents, the Secretary of State issues an apostille and the document is now ready to be used in foreign jurisdictions.

  1. For a full legalization, the document then must be mailed or personally delivered to the U.S. Department of State Authentications office in Washington, D.C. for an authentication.

Processing Times Can Vary
